10 Things to Look For in a Survival Knife

August 30th, 2010 by admin No comments »

A survival knife is a tool that every outdoorsman should.

A good knife can survive many applications, such as cutting branches, the rails can be used for broken arms. You can use it as a crowbar or digging tool. to bind strip cutting of the vine, a raft together or a shelter. A fishing spear from a straight piece of wood. But what makes a functional survival knife in the wild or in a life and death situation.

1st A survival knife should not be too difficult, a goodBalance between blade and handle. They are implementing this with you on your backpack or belt, so not too hard is important.

2nd The shaft guard should be large, so that your hand does not slide the knife and cut yourself. This is to happen the last thing you want when you are in the wilderness.

3rd Another feature it should have, is a container in the handle for waterproof matches or a different type of fire starter. Hook with line and all other survival items, such as inWater purification pills. With an "O" ring on the cap to keep out the moisture and keep your items dry. Remember, though, is a knife with a container not as strong as a solid grip, but still have its uses.

4th A primary compass is a good idea, but you want a compass mounted to the end of the handle. It must handle detachable from, a steel knife compass disturb.

5th To cut small limbs, offer some survival knives a sawtooth blade on the back. Thisis a great addition to your knife.

6.A survival knife should have a "full tang", which means the blade and handle are one piece. The tang is the part of the blade that goes into the handle.

7th Ideal leaf size is 4-6 cm. This length is good for the size and control. More will be exaggerated and add weight.

8th Knife blade material: Carbon or stainless steel. The harder the material the blade will hold an edge longer. A carbon blade is dulleasy, but can be sharpened razor sharp. Stainless steel is more expensive but requires less maintenance. Stainless steel knives have some carbon in them, so as not to make "steel", just stainless. If you are in a humid environment, you want to stick stainless steel.

9th The handle should be grooved, checkered or a knurled surface contoured to fit around the users hand. A smooth grip getting slippery and dangerousto use.

10th A good sheath is must-with a stable lock to keep out a fall. Made of leather or a hard nylon that is double stitched with nylon or synthetic is.

You need to make your chances of survival is razor-sharp, this is a must. Dull knives cause more injuries than sharp knife, its a fact. Think about this, you will apply more pressure with a blunt knife, which allows you to easily slip and get cut.

The choice of a survival knife can be confusing process withall brands, sizes and styles out there. Not all knives are created equal, but with the list above, the survival knife, you should see your "best friend".

2010 Cold Steel Recon I: Tough Blade

August 1st, 2010 by admin No comments »

Cold Steel RECON 1 SERIES ® is raising the bar in the knife industry and our Recon 1 ® tactical folders are setting a standard that is hardly known to beat. Why? Because they are so hard as nails and is like a chain saw! Every facet of their construction has been developed to make it about as strong, durable and efficient as possible. The blades are made from imported Japanese AUS 8A stainless steel is the vacuum has been heat treated and sub-zero quenched, and from the gripsFunction of G-10 laminate scales artfully shaped and baked for a great and non-slip grip. Plus, they are together with the latest high-starch instead of mechanical fasteners and spacer 6061 further established by heat treatment. To supplement their Super Tough blades and handles, they are equipped with our revolutionary Tri Ad Lock ® (see page 4), which practically precludes lock failure. To complement its tactical mission, we have every leaf, a tough, black Teflon ® finish. Our tests haveshown, this coating offers three key benefits for tactical knife. First, it helps to resist rust the blade. Secondly, eliminates glare and reflections that can give their users away. And thirdly, it is a superior lubricant, which causes the blade itself through tough material with markedly less friction slip. This means you can cut deeper and far longer than with a non-Teflon ® coated blade. To open the Recon 1 ® as easy as possible and do we have equipped each knife with aThumb disc

Grade 9 Yellow Chromate Alloy Steel Hex Bolt, 5/16″-24, 1-3/4″ Length (Pack of 1)

Grade 9 Yellow Chromate Alloy Steel Hex Bolt, 5/16″-24, 1-3/4″ Length (Pack of 1)

Amazon needs to be more specific here – these are L9 fasteners that are part of a branded system. They indeed are 180ksi fasteners, higher than grade 8, and they have oversized bolt heads on them. They are really pretty beefy, but in case you scout around on the internet trying to find what these are, google “L9 fastener” rather than “grade 9″ (which just gives you the metric 12.9 spec)

Grade 9 Yellow Chromate Alloy Steel Hex Bolt, 5/16″-24, 1-3/4″ Length (Pack of 1) Feature

  • Hex Bolts feature a chamfered point
  • Coated with yellow zinc chromate for corrosion resistance
  • Hex head for easy driving
  • Length is measured from under the head
  • Fine threads tap better into harder materials and thin walls, and are stronger in tension than coarse threads

Grade 9 Yellow Chromate Alloy Steel Hex Bolt, 5/16″-24, 1-3/4″ Length (Pack of 1) Overview

Hex bolts have a chamfered point to aid insertion into a tapped hole or nut. Length is measured from under the head.

Grade 9 fasteners (also referred to as Grade L9) are extremely strong and are made of a high-grade alloy steel. They are grade-marked on the head with nine radial lines, a dot, and the characters L9, and have a minimum tensile strength of 180,000 psi. Yellow Zinc Chromate fasteners have been coated with zinc and with yellow chromate. As a result they offer corrosion resistance that is slightly higher than clear zinc.

Hex head fasteners can be driven with simple wrenches, and require minimal clearance above the fastener because they can be driven or loosened from the side.

A threaded fastener’s size name includes information about the major external diameter, followed by the threads per inch, which indicates if it is coarse or fine. Fine threads are preferable when working with harder materials or when threading into a thin material. They are also stronger in tension than coarse threads, and generally provide higher shear strengths.
